New editor of the Revelstoke Review comes to us from Vancouver Island

Hi there news readers of Revy, I'm thrilled to be here as your editor.

Hi there news readers of Revy, I’m thrilled to be here as your editor.

Has your life ever flipped upside down over the course of a 12 minute phone call? It makes your head spin right!

I might still be reeling, so if you see a curly haired brunette stumbling down the street looking like a lost puppy, that is what is going on.

I got a call from our group publisher on March 29 telling me he wanted me to move to Revelstoke. Why me I’m still not sure. I think I’ve tricked them into thinking I’m awesome because I am under 30 and a bit overly enthusiastic, we will see if I can keep up the facade.

He was audibly disappointed when I asked for a few days to make up my mind.

And so I did some research. I found that the town was beautiful, but the rental market was extremely tight and expensive. I mapped out how much closer I would be to the family farm in Fairview, Alta. as well as my good friends in Golden and Calgary.

I reached out to those friends. “What do you think of Revelstoke? Will I like it?”

I changed my mind probably 10 times.

But in the end I knew I had to come. So I finished a bunch of projects for the Campbell River Mirror, went on a mini-vacation with my little sister, who flew in to visit me from Edmonton, packed my car and got on the 8:25 a.m. ferry from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay on Monday, April 30.

Funnily enough I was driving away from my previous job in Pincher Creek on April 30 two years ago. There is something about this time of year that triggers wanderlust.

This is my fifth big move in pursuit of a meaningful and challenging journalism career. In 2011 I moved to Calgary to get a communication degree majoring in journalism from Mount Royal University.

In 2014 I moved to New Zealand for six months to do a semester at Wintec in Hamilton. I graduated in spring of 2015 and moved down the highway to Pincher Creek where I started off as the intern, quickly became a reporter and was hired as the editor not six months later.

I spent a year in Pincher Creek before jumping on the chance to move to the ocean.

Campbell River is beautiful and I loved it there, but it was time for a new adventure. So I said my goodbyes and chased the sunrise.

I suppose I will have to learn how to ski, or board, but I’m pretty clumsy…

Check out previous stories I have written here.

I would love to hear from you. What do you like to see in the paper and on the website? Do you know of something or someone interesting in the community, let me know! Do you have a spectacular photo, please share with me at jocelyn.doll@revelstokereview.com, tag us on Instagram at revelstoke_review or share with us on Facebook.

I believe that a thriving community and a thriving local news organization go hand in hand. I want to get to know you. I want to entertain and inform and hopefully make a difference by building connections.

In the meantime I am playing catch-up and sleeping on an air mattress while I wait for my furniture to be delivered.

Baby steps.
