As I consider the stalemate between the government and our educators, I have wondered if injecting more volunteerism into the system would be helpful.
I belong to a church that calls upon its members to serve in a vast variety of positions throughout the world at their own expense.
It is not at all unusual for the volunteers to work alongside paid employees. For three years, my husband and I worked with two other couples to preside over 1,500 other volunteers.
We worked alongside five paid engineers and 70 other paid employees.
The employees were on a career track. The volunteers changed regularly. There is a careful character check before a volunteer is accepted and there is ongoing training during their service.
I recommend this system for the growth in work skills it offers the volunteers and for the economic benefit to society.
