Gradually the U.S.A. is evolving into a more just society like Canada’s.
Due to a more religious right wing, progress has been painfully slow, but the U.S. Supreme Court is upholding gay marriage and universal health care. This from a predominately conservative Supreme Court.
In Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government continues its streak of nine consecutive losses at the Supreme Court. This is embarrassing, but nonetheless illustrates that his party’s archaic ideas no longer have relevance in modern societies.Its best arguments don’t win anymore.
Understanding and compassion backed by law are carrying the day because of separation of church and state and all Conservatives can now resort to is the ‘notwithstanding clause’ which is a pretty pathetic fallback position.
Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a devout Catholic and the chief architect of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms left his bible outside of the Parliament when he went to work.
