Dear editor,
As we begin life under a Harper majority government, I am having to re-evaluate my estimation of Canadians’ intelligence.
The fact that Harper has dissembled and fear-mongered his way to a majority reflects very badly on the electorate.
I didn’t believe that we would collectively allow this to happen. I thought Mr. Harper’s record as prime minister would disgust every one of us.
I thought that his contempt of Parliament, broken promises, illegal tactics, and dirty electioneering would repel people, and that we would as a nation stand up and protect our democratic tradition.
I believed that we cared enough about the future of our country to get off our couches and cell phones to vote this time.
It didn’t happen; not only was Harper unpunished for his past record, he was rewarded with more power — with absolute power.
I hope those who voted for the status quo will soon regret their choice of government, and I hope that in four years those who couldn’t be bothered to use their brains and/or their legs will get a grip on the issues and fulfill their civic responsibilities.
Anne Bauman,
