As a participant in the town hall-style session held on Aug. 4 regarding climate change and sustainability convened by Alistair MacGregor, it is interesting to read his report as published in the Citizen of Oct. 5.
As one can see, we were divided into 10 groups each with a particular focus.
In the brainstorming session that ended our deliberations each section came up with multiple solutions to their topic, which was very gratifying. My query now is what happens next?
His final paragraph concludes that we the people of the Cowichan Valley want “swift, bold and lasting action” to address climate change.
True!
May I suggest that in all good conscience Alistair prioritize these excellent ideas into three categories viz: able to be implemented immediately; able to be accomplished in the next three years; able to be completed but require a long-term process.
In other words, he prioritize our visions for the future practically, economically and politically.
Then, would he consider a further town hall meeting to outline an action plan?
To this I would also add that though this first meeting was very well attended and supported that we broaden our reach. At a number of meetings of concerned citizens at the seniors centre it would seem that we need be as inclusive as possible on this issue, therefore, bring together as many representatives of various organizations here in the Valley also: service groups, church groups, educational groups, corporate groups, political groups, environmental organizations. I’m sure you could add a few more of your own. ‘We the people’ means being as inclusive as possible. Some may even need a personal invitation.
We now have the outline of a better future already stated: let’s see if we can put some flesh on these bones and bring it to life.
