On a personal note: Shots fired

Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac shares his stories of policing and life.

While working in Rossland, I was called to attend a vehicle that was on fire along the side of the highway. The couple was able to safely get out of the vehicle. The vehicle was engulfed on my arrival. With the Rossland Fire Department en route, there was very little I could do other than watch the show and talk to the driver and his passenger. I learned they were en route to Alaska and their worldly possessions were in the camper. We were standing pretty close and I’m hearing a lot of popping and firecracker type sounds  — a strange noise to be coming from a vehicle. I asked the driver what he had in the vehicle that was making this popping sound. “Just ammunition,” was his response. My response was, “Why don’t we just walk over to my police car and move back a little further.” Needless to say, I told the fire department to let her burn.
