Just when one begins to despair about the state of democracy around the world, a good news story comes along to boost one’s morale.
Thursday’s re-election of the Liberals in Ontario is more like what was said about the re-election of Barack Obama — the lesser of two evils.
Certainly the Liberal government that has ruled the roost in Ontario has not exactly performed with great competency or efficiency.
But, it’s the overwhelming rejection of Hudak’s 19th Century, make-the-peasants-pay capitalism that puts a smile on one’s face. This voters’ choice came despite a campaign by much of Canada’s corporate media promoting Tim Hudak as the saviour of Ontario, if not the rest of Canada.
But then, and I’ve said this many times before, our corrupt media has and still is notorious for covering for a clapped-out form of so-called free market capitalism.
In 2008 the whole mess had to be bailed out to the tune of $2 trillion. Not that you would know any of this by perusing the business pages or watching the business news on TV.
Ontarians had enough of Horrible Harris. They didn’t want Horrible Hudak as a second act.
Hudak, just like Mitt Romney south of the border, overplayed his neo-con credentials.
Hee, hee, hee, we’ll fire thousands, cut, slash, and burn to balance the books. No wonder the good people of Ontario were alarmed.
There will be much wailing, gnashing of teeth, and tearing of garments on Bay Street and even Wall Street. Their man, just as in the US of A, fell flat on his face.
Plus Horrible Harper must be feeling very nervous. There have been rumors that his band of neo-conservative nastiness is already in trouble in the largest province in Canada. So, who knows what the year 2015 holds for Harper?
It remains to be seen just how Kathleen Wynne‘s win will impact on the people of Ontario. Will this present gang of Liberals be barely competent or will they fall on their faces like Dalton McGuinty’s gang did?
But it’s not Tim Hudak and that’s a cause for celebration all in itself.
