OPINION: Investing in health and seniors care

Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes on health and seniors care investments.

Our government is proudly supporting plans to redevelop Cariboo Memorial Hospital, and we have committed to reviewing the concept provided by Interior Health, which represents the next step in making this project a reality.

I am pleased to see that work is underway to move redevelopment forward in Williams Lake.

This is exciting news for residents, as well as our physicians and employees in the Cariboo region.

Cariboo Memorial Hospital and Health Centre has provided excellent care for families in the area for many years and redevelopment will benefit patients, staff and visitors to the hospital for decades to come and the provincial government supports this plan.

In addition to investing in healthcare infrastructure here at home, our government recently announced that it is investing $500 million as part of an action plan to enhance the way we care for seniors in every part of the province.

Part of this plan focuses on increasing direct-care hours for seniors in residential care to a consistent average of 3.36 direct-care hours per resident day in both publicly administered and contracted residential-care facilities.

Our government will work with health authorities and industry to hire about 1,500 additional staff province-wide. I’m proud to be part of a government that recognizes the contributions of seniors, and is focused on enhancing their lives, as they have ours.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to help deliver investments and services that will improve the health of our whole community for years to come.

Coralee Oakes is the MLA for Cariboo North and Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction.
