OUR VIEW: Come on, Surrey. A little snow and ice can do us some good

When it comes to rain, we are connoisseurs. But compared to the rest of Canada, when it comes to snow and ice, we get a big ‘N’ for novice.

If Jamaica can have its own Olympic bobsled team, and the United Arab Emirates can build an indoor ski mountain in the sweltering Arabian Desert, surely we can handle a little snow here in the Lower Mainland.

Some caffeinated headlines indicate that “Snowmaggedon” is upon us here on the West Coast.

It is not.

This is just a little more snow, and frustrating icy road conditions, than we are used to.

Sure it’s a pain, having to shovel your driveway more than three times in one winter. Having to chip out your car in the morning is a real drag, too. So’s the commute.

When it comes to rain, we Lower Mainlanders are connoisseurs. But compared to the rest of Canada, when it comes to enduring snow and icy roads, we get a big ‘N’ for novice.

Still, we’ll survive.

In fact, we might actually learn something from the experience. Some of us have learned the hard way that it is, in fact, a good idea to turn the water taps off when there’s a big freeze, to prevent your pipes from bursting.

And some of us are actually getting to know our neighbours as we help push one another’s cars out of ice and snow.

Some lead-foot drivers are actually being forced to slow down on the road simply because everybody else is.

And don’t forget the children, who get to experience a white winter as they go out to play.

Snowmen, toboggans, it’s all good. Just don’t forget to warn the little ones what Zappa said about watching out for that yellow snow…
