Tuesday’s pipeline announcements may have officially marked the end of Justin Trudeau’s “sunny ways” era for many British Columbians – but we think the PM’s decisions were sound and reasoned.
We agree with Surrey MP Randeep Sarai when he told us it was all about balance.
“Canadians have told us that we need to address climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting economic prosperity,” Sarai said. “I believe that (Tuesday’s) decision on Kinder Morgan reflects that belief – the fact is that Canada’s energy industry is and must continue to be a source of good, middle-class jobs.”
By rejecting the Northern Gateway proposal and imposing a moratorium on crude oil tanker traffic along our north coast, we think Trudeau took a major step in fulfilling his government’s environmental responsibilities.
The Kinder Morgan project is going to give B.C. a huge economic boost – and with the 157 conditions imposed by the government along with the Ocean’s Protection Plan, the risk to our coastal communities should be minimal.
