OUR VIEW: Fun for the whole family

Sidney Days is the perfect opportunity to experience the best that the Peninsula has to offer

It’s that time of year again and we couldn’t be happier.

Just in time for Sidney Days, the sun started gracing the Peninsula with the glory we’ve so sorely missed these past few weeks – or is it months? How many times have you heard the term June-uary?

This weekend will be a wonderful time to get the whole family out to enjoy what our community has to offer. Festivities get underway tomorrow with the grand reopening of Iroquois Park at 11 a.m. The kids will love the water spray park.

In the afternoon, head over to Beacon Park for the first community barbecue sponsored by Thrifty Foods. Later, there’s a cake cutting then fireworks accompanied by music – a Sidney Days first.

Sunday is the grand poobah, though, as we celebrate Canada Day. The morning starts with the annual fun run, then a pancake breakfast, followed by the wonderful Sidney Days parade. Iroquois Park has no shortage of entertainment going on throughout the day, then don’t miss Slegg’s Build-a-Quick-Boat race, which launches from Glass Beach below Beacon Park at 4:45 p.m.

The hardworking volunteers at Peninsula Celebrations Society help make all this happen.

Also this weekend, get a taste of Greater Victoria’s Hindu culture with the Cultural and Arts Festival of India at the temple in Saanichton.

We may be a smaller community than Victoria, but we certainly know how to celebrate in style and with a big bang. The events in Sidney offer a sizeable rivalry to downtown’s party and are often viewed as far more family friendly.

And this is just the start of the top-notch summertime events that get hearts fluttering and bring smiles to all our faces.

Sidney Days continue to be voted and mentioned as a favourite of residents of and visitors to the Saanich Peninsula. And it’s no wonder why – there’s no shortage of fun happening all weekend.
