Outages outrage

Further to Dan Tennant’s letter of March 9, 2011 we would also like to add our comments.

We are long-time residents out here and have never experienced outages like we have in the last three years. We are all prepared for the power to go out, with generators, etc., but when we lose our only means of communication to the outside world (email is on dial-up) it then becomes very scary. Thank goodness our neighbours were able to phone us the other night and inform us of the tsunami alert or we would have slept right through it.

We understand that someone from the reserve was having a heart attack and the family couldn’t reach anyone so they drove him straight into the hospital where he subsequently passed away. So much for our emergency phones also.

If Telus spent one-quarter of the money they spend on stupid ads on TV or dipped into that big $750million fund they apparently have to build a huge complex in downtown Vancouver on the town of Port Renfrew — a new transmission tower and a cell phone tower — we would be much appreciative.  The hundreds of tourists and fishermen who visit our town would also love to be able to use their cell phones without counting on the U.S. for service and paying huge roaming charges.

Mr. and Mrs. P. McGregor

Port Renfrew
