Passport problem

Resident says ICBC does not recognize a Canadian passport as proof of Canadian residency.

It seems ICBC does not recognize your Canadian passport as proof of Canadian residency.

I went to our local Service B.C. location with my driver’s licence (DL) and Care Card with the expectation of getting the new combination card.

Because my Care Card had my middle name on it and my DL did not, they could not process the combination card.

I was told to bring in my passport which I subsequently did and was then told by another Service B.C. agent that it was not a valid proof of residency and I needed a Canadian Citizenship Certificate. (I was born in the U.S. and immigrated to live with relatives 60 years ago as a 10 year old.)

I have been a Canadian citizen for over 45 years and my citizenship certificate was likely used to obtain my passport many years ago.

United States Customs accepts my passport when I cross the border but ICBC does not?

Who are these people?

To get a new citizenship certificate costs more than $70 and takes up to six months. By the way, the renewal fee for your useless passport, in the eyes of the ICBC, is now $120 if you live in Canada.

Also keep in mind, you do not need the combination card.

If you do not mind carrying the two cards, simply pay the $17 for your driver’s licence renewal.
