Is this really what we have come to here in the Lower Mainland? Around the world, there are young women being raped on public buses and children being murdered in cold blood, and here we are so oblivious to real issues that something like paying a few extra dollars to run in a climate-controlled indoor track warrants the time to sit down and write a letter about it.
Every day I am amazed by the comments from all of those “the world owes me everything just because I was born on it” types who feel it is the duty of the government and society to leap into action at a moment’s notice to answer their every beck and call. There never seems to be any concern for how petty the problem may be or who will cover the funds needed to cater to their needy complaints.
In a quick two-minute scan of the area around the Guildford Recreation Centre on a map I found two elementary schools with all-weather fields (gravel soccer fields) and another two city parks with grass soccer fields, all within a five-block radius. If it has become so egregiously expensive for letter writer Ana Fisic to run indoors, then why not take advantage of the “free” parks in her area and go for a few laps around one of the playing fields? I know they are not climate-controlled and you might get a little wet some days, but no matter what your “socio-economic” status is, you can always afford “free.”
And please, do us all a favour – the next time you get the urge to write a letter, take a second to consider the “real” hardships people are suffering through around the world before you subject everyone to your petty problems.
