Policing in Esquimalt could improve greatly

Re: Esquimalt eyes other options for policing (vicnews.com, March 4)

Kudos to Mayor Barb Desjardins’ recent announcement that Esquimalt council is inviting alternative offers for the delivery of our police services.

As taxpayers, we in Esquimalt are tired of being the lone community, outside of Victoria, that has to keep paying more to fund the Capital Region’s growing crime problems handled by VicPD. Meanwhile, we hear reports that Oak Bay Police are having trouble keeping busy in between stops at Tim Hortons.

Hence, we will be leading the investigation in selecting the best policing model for our community and in determining the finances attached to that policing.  Our goal is to achieve affordable community-based policing with a more dedicated presence on our streets that is fully accountable to us.

Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin and VicPD Police Chief Jamie Graham have implied that is unrealistic. Nevertheless, Esquimalt has officially reported a crime against our community’s precious tax dollars. The case remains an open file and VicPD is fully welcome to join the usual suspects in defending themselves.

But, if you want our contract, then it is advisable that bidders put forward an offer that matches our needs. We know we can do better. We have seen the future. Our neighbouring police forces that best share our vision will be rewarded with our money. Case closed.
