After nine years under the Harper government that never got over 40 per cent of the popular vote, it’s easy to see why proportional representation is an issue.
Our first-past-the-post system leads to two parties with the same basic platform, and can, as we saw in the U.S. election, provide the voters with the two most unpopular candidates. Which is why 95 per cent of democracies use some form of proportional representation.
