To the Editor,
Re: Unions benefit workers with democratic voice, Letters, June 23.
Liz Fox would have you believe that well-paying union jobs are the key to prosperity. Unfortunately, she has the cart before the horse.
Our current high standard of living is the result of entrepreneurs who put their capital at risk to produce a superior product. Competition in the marketplace will assure that products are reasonably priced.
Once the cost of production and distribution exceed the market price (sometimes caused by greedy unions), the business will cease making the product.
As a consumer, we all desire the lowest possible price for the products that we purchase. To this end, producers are often forced to close shop and move production facilities to locations where labour, taxes and distribution costs are lower.
Socialists will try to outlaw the move or instead expropriate the production assets. However, this action would kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
The end result will be economic suicide that will evolve into a workers’ utopian paradise such as North Korea, where many of the people are forced into starvation.
