I was not surprised by Lance Nater’s remarks at last week’s RDN meeting calling our town polarized as a result of council’s make up (‘RDN hears Qualicum complaints,’ The NEWS, May 15).
It is no secret that Nater has for many years, been a strong supporter of Mayor Teunis Westbroek. Previous to this current council’s election, Westbroek, as part of the original “gang of three,” controlled council for the better part of nine years.
During this period, many very sincere and competent councilors such as Wendy Mauer, Anton Kruyt, Mike Wansink and Jack Wilson were regularly ignored and 3-2 votes were common on major issues.
Nater sat on the board of the Eaglecrest Resident’s Association and served a term as president but never spoke out or raised any concerns about the continuous splits on those councils. Why was Nater so silent then?
