To the editor:
The articles advising motorists to install proper winter tires on their vehicles is very good information.
However, none of these articles mention one very important and potentially life-saving fact.
The fact is the special soft rubber in winter tires hardens over time. After several years, winter tires have no better traction on icy surfaces than summer tires.
Not only is this lack of traction dangerous in itself, but drivers unaware of this condition, will be assuming their tires are doing the job, when in-fact, they are not.
