Reflection on last Monday’s Town of Lake Cowichan public meeting

Editor: We admired the patience of council faced with appeals and personal agendas of people pushing their kids, clubs, capers, and conundrums.

Unfortunately, much of the loose non-agenda should have been and we hope will be addressed to the organizations and people most concerned and having to pay for and be responsible for the whims and wishes of a few.

One issue – regarding the meeting of South Shore Road and North Shore Road by the bridge – requires more thought. Diagrams and different possibilities before contracts, etc, with some of the main users of this roadway should be number one.

At times, there are 50-plus logging trucks using this connector. Some are double length and heavily loaded.

Not much bothers the drivers. They have seen it all, but in asking a couple of them how they feel about a roundabout on their route, I received some practical feedback (only one laughed).

Another said he hoped the engineering will be better than the one done at the top of King George, because he could see the objects, such as the one in the centre, being wiped out by a vehicle.

Another grunted that with so many drivers not knowing how to signal or use a roundabout, on a main road this would mean chaos.

With respect to free camping for musical festivals, and other events, these fun things would certainly be of interest to surrounding residents and probably the RCMP for opinions.

In addition to all those potentially affected, taxpayers and small business in the hospitality field who would be affected.

Other than those comments, it was an enlightening session, except for the fact that some councillor sand audience speakers forgot it was a general meeting, and could not be heard. Communication is the first requisite.
