Refugees crisis not a local issue

Regarding the recent Qualicum Beach council motion to bring a Syrian family here using local tax dollars.

What are they thinking? Or are they?

This is a federal matter, not a municipal one. Our federal government makes the decision of Canadian’s involvement on our behalf and allocates our tax dollars accordingly as part of Canada’s international policy. To commit local dollars away from local housing and sustainability issues is just plain irresponsible.

Should a private group or organization take up the mantle and initiate the effort and raise funds, I for one would be happy to assist. Both Knox and St. Stephan’s United Church raised such funds, via bake sales, dinners and various other fundraisers and engaged many qualified volunteers, to bring a Bosnian family to our area, away from their war-torn country. This took well over a year and many hands.

Perhaps council is hoping to look good in the public eyes, but please be assured, this situation is not about you. We all care about the terrible refugee situation and those of us who are able will do what we can outside of current federal tax commitment.
