To the editor:
After reading the article, headlined Residents pay premium prices for insurance, in Dec. 28 Free Press, I felt compelled to respond.
In the article, Jennifer Appleby says the majority of claims stem from damage to windshield glass and collisions with deer.
Instead of raising insurance premiums, maybe we should be looking at raising the road-maintenance standards back to what they used to be.
This would include mixing salt with the sand, so it would adhere to the road surface better; thereby, eliminating the need for such coarse sand, and our subdivision roads would also be bare of compact snow earlier.
As for the deer issue, the same thing applies. Raising the standards for shoulder mowing would allow us more time to react when deer are approaching the road.
I noticed in another article that fleet insurance is not going up. Go figure!
