Saanich must do more to protect from dangerous dogs

I am writing to express my concerns regarding dangerous dogs in our communities.

I am writing to express my concerns regarding dangerous dogs in our communities.

It has been six months now that our Havanese dog was killed on our property in Saanich by two Rottweiler dogs that broke through our fence and entered our yard. I watched in horror as they tore our beloved pet apart.

I could obviously do nothing about it, as I could only imagine what they would have done to me as well.

The neighbours have paid for the expenses of the pet and fence. I only wonder why anyone would want such dogs in close urban centres?

I ask, again, the mayor and council how they and their bylaw enforcement officers could deem dogs dangerous and yet let them remain in our communities?

I also ask: who is now responsible for any further incidents with such dogs?

I often run on local trails and I am sure I am not the only one who encounters threats of intimidation by uncontrolled dogs with owners who don’t care.

I would think that such dogs constitutes possession of a lethal weapon. All dogs will get loose at least once, but God forbid these types of dogs should get loose again. Why do we give them a second chance? If you think your dog was deemed dangerous unfairly then you should fight it.

I don’t think Saanich can go back on their word with these people now, but this needs to be changed so no dog in the future ever gets a second chance at killing or harming any person or their pet.
