Re: City voters reject $80M multiplex, March 14.
I am a firm believer in ‘build it and they will come,’ at least in respect to the event centre. The naysayers, NIMBYs and lemmings shot it down.
This smacked entirely of rich old selfish folks who basically threw in the towel and said: our kids are grown up; we don’t need new schools, we have paved roads and water at our house – to hell with the other people. This ‘no’ vote smacks highly of this.
Yes, the public was spooked by that white elephant downtown, in-fighting etc., but threw away an opportunity we won’t see again.
Dateline Nanaimo 2027, population 102,000, still no event centre. But hey, we can always go down to Lake Cowichan to see a live event, jump on good old ferries to go to Vancouver or take the thrill ride over the Malahat.
Same old, lame old Nanaimo, with apologies to Jethro Tull.

Re: City voters reject $80M multiplex, March 14.
Congratulations to all Nanaimo citizens who got out and voted in the recent referendum. No matter which way you voted, participating is what is fuels our democratic process.
A special thank you from the core group at No Vote 2017 to everyone who supported the ‘no’ vote side. Whether you were active on social media, put a sign on your lawn, came out to the information sessions, shared important research, volunteered to distribute material, supported our events, made a donation, spoke at council, wrote letters to the editor, stood in the rain and cold to get out the facts, or shared information with family and friends. Every single person helped achieve the stunning referendum result. You made a difference in your community.
Some of us from the ‘no’ vote group will be meeting to see how we can build on this amazing level of engagement, and a deep desire to make Nanaimo the best it can be. Many people have shown their passion and commitment to their city and community, and want to stay involved to continue to make a difference and influence city decisions. Stay tuned for more information on this, we will be back.
