Watching broods of quail guided by their protective parents going through my garden areas gave me continuous delight when I lived in Parksville.
Although the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre and the city aren’t able to address the problem (Quail falling through grates, The NEWS, June 20), probably through lack of funds/resources, how about a public appeal for folks to “adopt a grate” with installation starting in those areas that can be readily identified as areas of foraging or nesting?
If there is a person who could initiate finding out about the cost/design of sewer grates to save quails and ducks, perhaps the city could approach the shop department at Kwallikum Secondary School and maybe students/volunteers could make the grates at an affordable cost.
Maybe there are contractors who would donate or I would be happy to make a donation.
