Sea water, fresh water need our protection

We have a duty as stewards of this Earth to protect our water.

To the Editor,

Re: It’s important not to take water for granted, Opinion, March 22.

We have a duty as stewards of this Earth to protect our water. To ensure that there is clean water to drink and preserve the natural environment for wild and marine life. The time is now to take a stand against big business and show that we care about the future of our planet.

It is hard to believe that in a country with so much water that there are people living here under a boil water advisory. These people (mostly First Nation) are all of our responsibility and deserve our attention.

We on Gabriola Island are facing the possibility of having five freighter anchorages placed off the coast of our little island. The water is a daily playground for marine birds, migration ways for marine mammals and home to various marine life. We need to be the voice for those who cannot speak.

We need the federal government to step up and make policies that ensure that our water supplies and waterways are protected. It’s time for the government to pass an environmental bill of rights that respects, protects and fulfils our right to a healthy environment, including the right to clean water.
