Re: letter by Marc Fortin of Island Valley Farms (The NEWS, Oct. 23). I have read Fortin’s letter and the old expression “it’s easier to get forgiveness than permission” comes to mind.
In my mind, the timing of the burns was very suspect: late afternoon of a long weekend. One of the reasons Fortin gave in his letter was that the “venting” index was correct. Fortin and his advisors should check again. He is not the only one privy to the venting index and, in fact, when I read it, it was “poor” all weekend.
I sincerely hope Fortin will be a more considerate neighbour in the future and not so concerned with his bottom line.
I would also like to add that whomever issued the permits to Fortin (and to find out who has been an exercise in frustration) should do due diligence before allowing such permission.
