We have been avid supporters of the SPCA for decades. They provide an exemplary service across the country. It is wonderful that they can, through donations, provide heated shelter to the community’s small critters (rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils and birds), as reported in The NEWS.
We have a variety of birds in our neighborhood which we and our neighbours provide food and water. We have lots of rabbits in the neighborhood as well. In the past my children had gerbils, guinea pigs and turtles as pets. The ‘rats’ we have no experience with.
Also reported in The NEWS, the extreme weather shelter for the Parksville Qualicum Beach region for the homeless was closed at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9 “due to improved weather conditions and forecast,” according to Susanna Newton, alternate regional co-ordinator for the Homelessness Task Force.
As we were reading these articles on Thursday, Dec. 10, the wind was fairly gusty, the temperature was cool and the rain was pouring. Not really improved from the day before and the forecast is not much better.
As aptly put recently by fellow letter writer Bernie Smith: “Refugee help good, now onto homeless.”
