To the Editor,
Re: Planning process underway for new secondary school, Oct. 15
Reading that the school board is planning to build a gym or a trades building makes me want to throttle someone.
University is for higher education. Get an internship for trades and go jog in the park to get healthy. The school board never seems to want to spend money on academic or artistic venues for the students.
If there is money for new structures within our school district, what about classrooms for our special needs students, with trained teachers and staff? Currently, our special needs students have been integrated into public school classrooms, and while this works sometimes, sometimes it does not. It isn’t fair to the teachers, the majority of the class or the special needs child.
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to give the parents and the teachers another option? An option that doesn’t cost the parents an arm and a leg?
This is just one of the huge gaping needs that our district has. It makes me really upset that in the wake of school closures, program cutbacks, decreased maintenance and layoffs that the school board is going to take such a large sum to build a gym.
Considering dropout rates, let’s work on getting our children more engaged in the wonders of learning. This means more focus on artistic and academic venues on a district-wide level.
