Spoof or reality? Wish these other stories were fictitious

It was hard to distinguish between the spoof and the real news in the April Fool’s Day edition of the Citizen.

It was hard to distinguish between the spoof and the real news in the April Fool’s Day edition of the Citizen. In the face of climate change and the corresponding need to reduce fossil fuel emissions, who would believe a story about a speedway being built to give rich people a place to drive their expensive, noisy, gas-guzzling toys fast? Not to mention a speedway that plans to ferry at least some of its patrons in by helicopter from the Aerie, thereby eliminating the possibility of their patronizing any of the other businesses in the Valley! Unbelievable! But apparently true.

And who would believe a front-page story about restarting the incredibly slow and virtually useless rail service on the E&N tracks? This is not to say that good, modern light rail wouldn’t be a major enhancement to life on the Island, but nothing of the sort is being considered. Unbelievable! But apparently true. And then there was the fortunately untrue story about smoothing out the humps on Mt. Prevost — that was a good one. I just wish that the other two were equally fictitious.
