Subsidizing arts a touchy subject

To the Editor,

Re: More theatre subsidies make no sense, Letters, Feb. 4.

Subsidizing the arts in all its forms seems to be a touchy subject in these days of financial restraint.

To put things in perspective, I would like to quote Winston Churchill, who was supposedly asked during the Second World War if England should cut back on its support of the arts.

His reply: “then why are we fighting?”

I rest my case.
