Succession planning critical

We all know that in any type of well-run organization, they plan for senior management change before it happens.

Re: City manager resigns post, Oct. 27.

This week’s announcement that both Ted Swabey, city manager, and Ian Howat, general manager of corporate services, are leaving the City of Nanaimo has brought many questions. The biggest of which is just how well did Swabey, Howat and Mayor Bill McKay do their jobs?

We all know that in any type of well-run organization, they plan for senior management change before it happens. They train the staff so that they can carry on with little or any disruption to the organization when there is a change.

As one of my first bosses in management told me; it was his job to teach me so that within two years time I could do his job better than him. He said that if I could not do it by then he would have failed in doing his job.

We will soon see if these three managers did their jobs that the taxpayers of Nanaimo hired them to do or not.

The results are on these three people’s shoulders and cannot be put on any one else’s.
