Summerland council helped trail initiative

The Summerland Trans Canada Trail Society and the Trail of the Okanagans Society made improvements

Dear Editor:

On June 26 the Trail of the Okanagans Society held its 2018 AGM. A new board was elected, I decided to take a break and did not to run for re-election.

I’d like to take this opportunity and thank Summerland council for supporting the two trail groups that I represented during your term.

With council’s help, the Summerland Trans Canada Trail Society and the Trail of the Okanagans Society were able to not only improve and maintain trails used by many citizens and visitors, we also installed interpretive signage along the KVR Trail, a new biffy and picnic facilities at the gazebo, two beautiful maps, a trail garden with indigenous plants and a bike repair station.

Public Works was involved in all these efforts and also improved the trail access to the east entrance of Conkle Mountain Park.

The lakeside trail to Trout Creek and the resurfaced Garnet Valley Road attract an increasing number of cyclists. (This morning I met over 30 people cycling along Garnet Valley Road!)

I want to thank everyone for their openness in dealing with our groups, your consistent interest in consulting our members and for your efforts in securing funding not only for these projects, but also for the development of plans that will lay the basis for future improvements to Summerland’s cycling and hiking infrastructure.

Special thanks to Coun. Janet Peake for serving as our liaison to council.
