I am writing in regards to the community sports facility being proposed at the Okanagan College site.
Over the past few weeks, I have noticed numerous negative comments being made by folks who have written in, by the media, and by a number of local politicians.
Now that a site has been agreed upon, the tourniquete seems to be applied to nickel and dime the complex.
In order to attract the Summer Games and other championships, the facility requires an official sized track, infield, steeple chase pit, changing rooms with showers, meeting room, storage facility, a concession and stands that could all be under the same roof.
To my estimation, it would be unfortunate if a roof over the stands was not included. The cost per household would be less than three lattes.
The benefits of the sports facility is quite significant and the complex will be in high demand by different user groups.
It increases the profile of the college and provides about $1 to $2 million of revenue to the Vernon area for events like the summer and seniors games.
Numerous people with health issues, elementary and high schools likewise, can make use of this community complex. The rubberized track is ideal for walking and would be utilized by dozens of citizens daily.
I am a retired senior resident in Coldstream and I am fully aware of the sports facility costs being charged against my residence.
But I also have three grandchildren who are participating in our local school sports to whom I feel a responsibility in offering them such a sports facility in spite of the $17 per year increase on my property taxes.
I hope the silent majority is like minded and supports the facility at referendum time. It is time for all council members to be on board.
