Sweet Susie another delight from Shuswap Theatre

Review of local show

It is so wonderful that a woman is the editor. It is so great that women are taking their rightful place in the world. Now speaking of women, I came back to the Shuswap for my usual summer visit and was thrilled to see that Shuswap Theatre has a new woman director. I met Ms Lana Caputi briefly on opening night. I must say she has a wonderful eye for choreographing the movement of the actors. The chase scene and the fight scene were both so well done. When the hero, played by Shane Gorner, grabbed the villain, Vitaliy Demens, and swung him around, the audience was just hooting with laughter. I don’t know if anyone says “hooting” anymore, but that is what it was. Now the production is an old-fashioned melodrama. I overheard one lady say she hadn’t had so much fun at Shuswap Theatre since they had melodramas there years ago. The heroine, played by Madison Heiser, is quite delightful. She saves the hero and doesn’t let him forget it. Her “I am a woman” speech was quite stirring.

The other young lady, Alaura Bibby, was so much fun playing two characters.

Well, I could go on, but my message is that it is a delightful production and I look forward to it every summer. Last year I enjoyed Shipwrecked!, directed by James Bowlby, and I was so pleased to see that he wrote this summer’s play. So kudos to all involved.
