After recently acquiring a new couch and love seat set for our home, my wife and I decided to try to give our existing ones (still in fine shape if not mint condition) away.
After contacting all the social agencies we could identify, as well as several churches, we could find no one who was willing to take the furnishings off our hands, or identify persons we could convey them to directly.
Finally, after more than a week, in utter frustration, we delivered them to the dump, which saddened us greatly.
There is something very wrong with this picture. We keep hearing and reading about the number of poor working families and low income seniors in the Oceanside area and yet one cannot help but get the impression that convenience and (in at least one instance) concerns about “profit potential” get in the way of genuinely reaching those in need.
I think some of our local social agencies need to take a hard look in the mirror.
