Teachers honoured for opportunity with KFN

Dear editor,

The teachers of the Comox District Teachers’ Association (CDTA) would like to thank the K’ómoks First Nation  for their generosity and hospitality during our first Curriculum Implementation day on Friday, Sept. 30.  All SD71 teachers were invited onto the K’ómoks reserve to learn about some of the history of the K’ómoks people and to work together to figure out how to incorporate aboriginal perspectives and world views into our everyday teaching – a key component of B.C.’s revised curriculum.  This was a truly unique experience for local teachers and it highlights the positive working relationship between the K’ómoks First Nation, teachers, and SD71. British Columbia Teachers are committed to enacting the recommendations put forward by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The CDTA was also invited back to the Big House that same evening to witness and reaffirm our commitment to the Comox Valley Critical Incident Response Protocol created by the Community Justice Centre. This protocol commits teachers to dealing with acts of racism, hate, bigotry, and trans/homophobia quickly and appropriately. It was very fitting to have this event take place in the K’ómoks Big House. Thank you to the community members and organizations that also committed to doing what it takes to make our community a safe and accepting place.
