The efforts of many need to be recognized by one. There’s no doubt that the events of Aug. 14 will be in my memory for many days to come.
Living in the bounty of the Okanagan Valley it is hard not to take for granted the beautiful long summer days and the access to so many wonderful outdoor activities and venues in our local region.
One such amenity is my place of employment, The Golf Club at The Rise.
Opened on June 18, 2008, the golf course has provided locals and visitors alike a wonderful golfing experience and has become a contributing entity to the bounty of our region.
All of this was put at jeopardy when a grass fire, fuelled by gusting winds, threatened the bench lands surrounding The Rise, the properties where locals reside, and the golf course that many people enjoy.
I would be remiss if I did not write this letter to acknowledge the efforts of the Vernon Fire Department, the Okanagan Landing Volunteer Fire Department, the BX-Swan Lake Fire Department, Vernon city bylaw enforcement staff, the RCMP, the B.C. Ambulance Service, Vernon Search and Rescue, the Ministry of Forests, B.C. Wildfire Management Branch, and all of our local residents for their quick response in what was a co-ordinated effort to bring under control the grass fire. Without their commitment and dedication, this event had the potential to be catastrophic.
Due to their efforts, this event will become a story remembered by one as a success of many.
