The Centennial Park camping issue

As written on Page 5 of this week’s Gazette, the Town of Lake Cowichan’s elected officials have voted against allowing campers at Centennial Park for special events.

Councillors Franklin Hornbrook and Jayne Ingram voted against allowing camping, while mayor Ross Forrest and Bob Day voted in favour of it, for a fee, and under the town’s own rules and conditions.

It remains to be seen whether or not each councillor made the correct decision.

But, there is a 100 per cent fool-proof means of determining who is right in this not-so-subjective decision.

If the Victoria Motorcycle Club doesn’t come back this year, and if participation in the Summer Bonspiel drops, it’ll be made clear that Hornbrook and Ingram made the wrong decision.

If both events go on without a hitch, and participants find other means of accommodation within the Cowichan Lake area, their concern that allowing camping at Centennial Park negatively affects local business will have been proven correct.

For now, it’s about waiting and seeing.

On another note, councillor Tim McGonigle’s vote should have been heard (he was absent from the meeting). Particularly on such a divisive issue as this, wherein he has the potential to change the outcome.
