The city is no place to raise a chicken

Dear editor,

This letter is in response to sweet Ada’s letter to council Re: chickens.

Dear Ada, It is wonderful to see such a little girl taking charge and requesting what you want from our officials. And you write so well for someone just starting school. I understand how nice it would be for you to have chickens to lay your eggs. However, many people like me choose to live in the city away from farm animals. Even three chickens can lay a lot of eggs, and being so social they’re going to talk all day long. And they also poop a lot. So there’s lots of cleaning up to do, but maybe that would be a good chore for you to help out at home, and I guess it could fertilize your garden. My brother raises chickens on a rural property and it is expensive… building a chicken coop and fenced-in outdoor area, installing nesting boxes, putting in fresh water lines, buying chicken feed (although he also feeds them his kitchen scraps and garden vegetables). You know, a dozen delicious veggie-fed chicken eggs cost less than $4 at Thrifty’s. Maybe that would cost less than having chickens. I don’t know, I’ve never farmed before. So although I think you’re a sweet, smart girl, I’m hoping that the City will continue its no-chickens-in-the-city rule.
