The gayest games

I just love that irony. Thank God for the athletes.

For once I agree with the Waymans.

You’ve got to love the hypocrisy regarding the gay community’s reaction to Russia’s recent anti-gay laws.

Where was the moral outrage from George Takei when China was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics? Are the human rights abuses of that country somehow less petition-worthy?

And should countries with blatant anti-gay cultures (Uganda, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia) be banned from the Games altogether? Where do we place the moral gauge? Should Canada be barred from hosting the games given its treatment of aboriginal communities?

Or maybe, just maybe, we should strive to keep politics out of the Olympics. For in the past, the combination of the two brought us everything from the tragic (1972 Munich) to the self-defeating (1980 Moscow, 1984 Los Angeles).

Either way, we cannot advocate for the rights of a special group, while marginalizing the plight of others. Wasn’t it communist atheists who introduced the concept of all rights being equal, but some are more equal than others?

Love that irony. Thank God for athletes.
