Water as a commodity that is bought and sold presents an ethical dilemma.
Canadians understand the importance of a universally accessible health system as something we value as a just society. No one wants to charge those who need our medical system more than others a user fee for their use of the system.
We understand that some things are essential to life. Water is one of these life sustaining elements and to use water as a generator of revenue is troublesome. Once water becomes a commodity it will be something that is sought after by those who offer money.
If irresponsible use of water is an issue, address that problem. Nelson council must not look at water as a commodity that is accessible by those who are able to pay. It must remain equally accessible and available to all.
