So many letters about smoke made me want to write because of my allergies to wood smoke and all the times I have had to hold my breath as I run down the road. Wood smoke gives me migraines, loss of voice (some people might not mind that) pains in my chest and a cough.
However, I can understand people wanting to heat with wood. How can they do it without creating a cloud of smoke? Purchase a wood stove that burns cleanly and use it properly.
Sometimes the Regional District of Nanaimo gives incentives if you purchase wisely. When you start the fire make sure the wood is burning well before you close things down. And don’t forget to have your chimney cleaned.
The EPA has some good advice at www.epa.gov/burnwise.
