Although I am a little concerned about the issue of underage drinking at the YAM, I find I still have to agree with Graham Bosecker on this (The News, March 15).
I moved to Parksville when I was 17 and I lost a few friends here and honestly, some of those kids died out of boredom!
They had nothing to do — we had nothing to do because Parksville has never been oriented toward the youth and children of the community, so we got into trouble.
I’m 37 now, and what do we have? Yes we have the skating arena, very nice. But what else?
There’s no movie theatre, although we used to have one. When I first moved to town they were tearing it down. The pool hall was shut down. The youth group in Qualicum, shut down. Their aren’t even any youth orientated stores in our local mall for the kids!
Seriously, how much louder can we tell them they are not welcome or wanted in this community?
Is it any wonder our children are turning toward drugs and alcohol?
There must be some special people out there in our community who have the ways and means to make a difference in the lives of our youth?.
Come on people, just remember when we are in our final years who will be there to take care of us if we aren’t there to take care of them?
