I have resided in the Guildford area of Surrey for the past 15 years.
I would like to share a story about my seven-year-old son and my ex-husband.
Every year, the duo lights up my home with Christmas lights and it is such a delight and labour of love.
My ex-husband is low on funds, but always adds something new every year. He is such an unsung hero and an utterly devoted man in our lives.
The fact that he is teaching our son to keep the true spirit and joy of Christmas alive became evident to me as I watched their reaction to my ex-husband’s Santa that he had kept carefully for 20 years being stolen, along with a penguin (it holds a lot of sentimental value to him) from our front yard.
Naturally, my son cried and his dad was very distressed to put it mildly, stating it causes him “to lose faith in people.”
He has seen the worst of injustice as he is a corporal with the RCMP.
Nevertheless, in the evening my son and his father ventured to Canadian Tire and I watched them put up a Snoopy doghouse Christmas light in the cold.
My son’s father’s fingers were bleeding and cracked, but he persevered and did it.
He taught our son the lesson of always keeping the spirit of Christmas alive.
I hope that same person does not steal any more of our lights as it would be heartbreaking for me to watch.
I would really like to see the Santa and penguin returned with a reward being offered as we are trying to teach our son the power of faith and that prayer works.
