While the news of the penny’s demise came as a surprise to many during the federal budget, most folks knew that its days were numbered. At a cost of 1.6 cents per penny to produce, it was the only currency in the country that was costing more to make than it was worth.
There may be no penny in our future, but it was an important part of our history. Who doesn’t remember shaking their piggy bank, trying to figure how much money you would have when all those pennies were added up. How about that science experiment in grade school where we dropped the penny into a glass of cola to watch what would happen. It was only corrosion at work, but for a young Einstein it was something to behold.
For those of you who are wondering what to do with your now valueless coins, may we suggest a contribution to the Nichole Stock Penny Drive, which, in light of the current penny situation may have a record year for donations. This might be the last year for the penny drive as we know it. Perhaps it will be known as the Nichole Nickel Drive next year.
I understand the reasons for the elimination of the penny, and am sure it is the right thing to do, but what am I supposed to do with my lucky penny?
