Time to move on from decade old attacks

Editor, The Record:

I made a conscious decision to avoid any of the obscene obsessions with victimization that defined the media coverage of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

George Bush used that attack as the excuse he needed to launch a regime change in Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In fact, had he wanted to bomb the country that produced most of the hijackers, he would have had to attack Saudi Arabia.

And by using the 9/11 attacks, and citing God himself as giving him the command to engage in that war, he turned his baseless attack on Iraq, which was no threat to the U.S., into a Holy War. And, by doing so, he silenced almost all opposition to that insanity, which has cost trillions of dollars and thousands of allied lives along with easily 50 times more civilian lives than were lost in the Twin Towers. How much revenge did the U.S. need, and still needs in Afghanistan?

That Bush and his cronies haven’t been charged with crimes against humanity is testament to just how well they used 9/11 as a shield for what became a complete gutting of the rights and freedoms of ordinary American citizens through the Patriot Act among other initiatives which, I might add, President Obama has extended out of fear that the far-right will question his loyalties.

America has lost any claim to moral authority in political ideals, in military prowess as the world’s self-appointed policeman, and they certainly have nothing to teach us about how to run an economy and care for our people.

Yet we, as a country, stand to become the next victim of 9/11 through the pressure brought by the U.S. government for Canada to conform to their own delusional and highly disturbing anti-democratic rhetoric that it’s all for security. No, it is not, it’s for corporate America to destroy us as a sovereign country.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is more than willing to submit us to the draconian Patriot Act in all its glory. His people in the PMO are banking that our favourable perception of Obama as a person will lull us into a false sense of security that we are just doing what 9/11 made necessary.

It makes us the 51st state, so wake up people before the huge con perpetuating 9/11 further destroys our Canadian values. 9/11 was an attack on them and how that country dealt with it is truly shameful.

Don’t let their tragedy become ours.
