Track, biodiversity and elk all inter-related
Re: “Pro-VIMC folks need to come to public hearing”, (Nov. 22, Citizen)
That edition also had a great article by Sonia Furstenau about the importance of biodiversity, and a tragic report by Sarah Simpson, of a daughter pleading for elk fencing to help prevent another fatal accident like the one that took her mother. It struck me that these three pieces could be considered together.
A portion of our community are supporting the VIMC and the GAIN group in their application for rezoning, so they can expand their motor track, which involves significant clear-cutting, asphalt laying, consumption of fossil fuels, emission of carbon and excessive noise.
Those receiving monetary help from VIMC are thankful and I understand that, but I also believe their support has been bought.
Please think about what is happening here. Elk need to move. Fencing along the highway and wildlife overpasses have been used effectively elsewhere. In addition leaving as much of their habitat intact is essential.
In addition to removing a lot of forest and fencing their track so elk don’t walk out on it, is not the way to protect this magnificent animal population. Elk were here before us and have provided a food source for many generations.
Don’t be bought by VIMC. Don’t be intimidated. I will be attending the next public hearing on Dec. 9 but I will not support VIMC.
