Council meetings aren’t high on my list of entertaining events, but when a hot topic is on the agenda the action can be quite stimulating and unpredictable, as was the case at Qualicum Beach’s town council meeting April 7 when the last agenda item burst forth for debate.
Tempers flared, sparks flew, curt remarks erupted. What was most disconcerting was the anger of certain council members that was directed at the public or more specifically, at residents who have been following the proposed boundary change amendment with concern.
After the mayor concluded first reading with a recorded vote of the usual three in favour and two opposed to first reading for changing the Growth Containment Boundary, he adjourned the meeting and residents were permitted two minute comments.
It was clear from the residents’ comments that they understood more about the issues surrounding this amendment and the numerous implications resulting from a boundary change than the majority of council.
Observing the majority of council’s irresponsible management of the amendment process increased the concerns of those present. I wonder if the town has the ability to represent the best interests of our community?
A public hearing is scheduled for April 22, even though the majority of council don’t fully understand what they are voting on. Residents should contact RDN directors with their comments and concerns about this amendment since the RDN directors will also be debating this issue and have the final word on the amendment.
