In the past week several fires have been purposely lit in the paper recycling bin beside the Vanderhoof Co-op.

The actions of the individual(s) responsible for this damage have forced the Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative (NWRI) to remove this bin.

This will result in a temporary loss of paper recycling for Vanderhoof until we can determine a solution.

The damage done has also cost a lot of money to repair the bins.  The NWRI, along with the Regional District Bulkley Nechako (RDBN), the District of Vanderhoof and the generosity of the Vanderhoof Co-op have worked very hard to get these bins put in place.

This was all done for the betterment of our community as well as the environment.  The paper recycling was new to the community and more and more people were starting to use the bins.  Unfortunately, this senseless act will halt that progression.

I would encourage anyone with any information about this vandalism to contact the RCMP at 567-2222.  Our community needs to be restored and vandalism such as this needs to stop.  This has been a very frustrating time for all those involved.  The NWRI will let the public know when a new bin is available for paper recycling. Our apologies for this disruption and we sincerely hope that everyone will continue recycling once we have the bin back in place.
